There’s a lot of care stitched into every comforter made by the sewing group at Erb Street Mennonite Church.
Since the 1940s, generations of volunteers have gathered at the church to make comforters in support of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Some are sold through the quilt auction at the New Hamburg Mennonite Relief Sale, raising funds for MCC’s work. Others are distributed by MCC to people around the world experiencing conflict or disaster.
Recently, the group’s members turned their hands to a project closer to home.
Volunteers made comforters to welcome new tenants who will move into Beyond Housing’s 887 Frederick Street townhomes early next year.
Each household will receive a handmade comforter — a practical gift of warmth and a reminder that their new community is ready to welcome them.
The Erb Street volunteers are part of a larger community effort. The sewing group at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church and individual volunteers have also contributed to the project, bringing many hands together to make the 20 comforters required.
