Project History

When organizations work together, they can often accomplish much more than would have been possible individually. This was certainly the case for the project at 7 Memorial Ave. in Elmira that eventually became known as The Foundry.

In January 2014, Beyond Housing purchased 1.25 acres of vacant land in Elmira in partnership with Woolwich Community Services (WCS). Located at the corner of Church St. East and Memorial Ave., this former foundry site was transformed to include the new headquarters for WCS which included their administrative offices, thrift shop, and food bank. Construction of the WCS building was completed in fall 2014.

In the spring of 2014, Beyond Housing conducted a community assessment survey. It confirmed what Beyond Housing had been hearing from people in the community, that there was a significant need in Elmira for affordable housing that was also easily accessible for those with mobility challenges. The decision to build an apartment building with an elevator for a variety of household types was confirmed.

In August 2015, the project was approved for Federal/Provincial funding of $1.7 million through The Region of Waterloo. With architectural drawings in the process of being completed, a capital fundraising campaign was announced in the fall of 2015. Construction began in spring 2016 and occupancy for tenants was secured in July 2017. In August 2017, tenants began moving and the building was fully occupied by early September.

A total of 58 qualified applications were received for the 25 available units. All of the approved tenants, a mix of seniors, non-seniors, and small families, were from the local community in-and-around Elmira. The new project was named The Foundry in recognition of the former use of the site. In addition to housing, Beyond Housing provides the services of a Community Support Worker to help foster and nurture relationships and build a sense of community within the new apartment building.

The construction portion of this project is now complete but the ongoing reason for this new building, responding to the need for affordable housing that will meet the physical, financial, and overall well-being of its tenants, will continue for many years to come. This will enhance and strengthen the entire
community for everyone.
